Spring Allergies – Is Your Plan Up to Date?

October 9, 2025

Ahhh, springtime in Sydney…

The days are warmer, the flowers are blooming, and the jacarandas are putting on a show. But for many of us, spring also means sneezing fits, itchy eyes, and tissues stuffed in every pocket.

Why allergies flare in spring

Spring brings higher pollen counts from grasses, trees, and weeds. If you’re prone to hay fever, you’ll know that even a short walk outside can leave you feeling miserable. Left untreated, allergies can affect sleep, work, school, and even trigger asthma or sinus infections.

Practical Tips for Reducing Symptoms

  • Check pollen forecasts and plan your outdoor activities for lower-pollen times (early mornings are often the worst).
  • Shower and change clothes when you come in from outside; it helps wash away pollen.
  • Keep your space a “pollen-free zone” by shutting windows on high-pollen days and using air conditioning on recirculate.
  • Try a saline rinse to clear allergens out of your nose (simple but surprisingly effective).
  • Don’t wait for symptoms to get bad, antihistamines and nasal sprays work best when started early.
  • Think about your environment and avoid planting highly allergenic species near the home, and keep dust and mould in check indoors.

When to seek help

If you find that over-the-counter options aren’t keeping your symptoms under control, or if allergies are affecting your sleep, energy, or asthma, it’s time for a review.
