The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently extended the approved duration for the use of Mirena. Previously, Mirena was approved as a contraceptive for up to 5 years. With the recent update, it can now be used as contraception for up to 8 years. This change comes after extensive research and clinical studies confirming the safety and contraceptive effectiveness of Mirena for this extended period. See further information here
IMPORTANT NOTE
- Mirena for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding may still need to be replaced after 5 years to ensure ongoing reduction in bleeding
- Mirena as the progesterone component of HRT/MHT in perimenopausal/menopausal women is only viable for 5 years. Replacement of Mirena or supplemental oral progesterone is indicated if the Mirena has passed the 5 year mark.
What this means for those who have a Mirena:
1. Extended Protection: You can continue to rely on your Mirena IUD for effective contraception for up to 8 years from the date of insertion.
2. No Immediate Action Needed: If your Mirena is still within the new 8-year timeframe, there is no need for immediate removal or replacement.
3. Routine Check-ups: Continue with your regular check-ups as advised by your healthcare provider to ensure everything is in order.
4. Reminder: You will have received a card with the date in which your IUD is due for removal. You will receive a reminder from HotDoc on this date requesting that you book an appointment with your practitioner to discuss what the best option for you is. Please do so.
