Needle-Free Flu Vaccines Now Available for Children & Teens

Expanded access to FluMist in NSW

NSW Health has expanded eligibility for the intranasal spray influenza vaccine (FluMist) to include all children and adolescents aged 2–17 years. Previously only available for children aged 2–4 years, FluMist can now be provided free of charge to eligible patients across this wider age group.

What is FluMist?

FluMist is a needle-free flu vaccine given as a quick nasal spray rather than an injection. It is designed to help protect against seasonal influenza and can be a helpful option for children and teenagers who feel anxious about needles.

Who is eligible?

FluMist is now available free for:

  • Children and adolescents aged 2–17 years

Why consider FluMist?

For many families, having an alternative to injections can make flu vaccination easier and less stressful. Increasing access to needle-free vaccination also supports broader flu prevention efforts across the community.

Is FluMist suitable for everyone?

FluMist is not recommended for some patients, including:

  • Children or adolescents who are immunocompromised
  • Those with severe asthma

Our GPs and nurses can help determine whether FluMist or the standard flu vaccine is the most appropriate option for your child.
