Diphtheria Vaccination – Expanded Access in Response to National Outbreak

May 27, 2026

Increased diphtheria activity across Australia

Australia is currently experiencing its largest recorded diphtheria outbreak in decades, leading the Australian Government to declare it a Communicable Disease Incident of National Significance.

Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection that spreads from person to person through close contact. While uncommon, it can cause serious illness and complications, particularly in vulnerable individuals.

Expanded vaccine access

In response to the outbreak, the government has expanded vaccination programs to help protect communities.

Free, government-funded diphtheria booster vaccines are now available for:

  • All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Why vaccination matters

Vaccination remains the best protection against diphtheria and helps reduce the spread of infection within the community.

If you’re unsure whether you are up to date with your vaccinations, our team can help review your immunisation history.
