Japanese Encephalitis (JE) Vaccine – Updated Eligibility in NSW

March 30, 2026

Ongoing risk in NSW

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) remains a mosquito-borne public health risk across parts of New South Wales. With ongoing virus detection and prolonged mosquito activity, NSW Health has expanded access to vaccination for those at increased risk.

Who is eligible for the free vaccine?

Vaccination is recommended for individuals at higher risk of exposure, including those who:

  • Live or work in affected Local Government Areas (LGAs)
  • Spend significant time outdoors in these regions

NSW Health has recently expanded the list of eligible LGAs, building on the existing high-risk areas across regional NSW.

Temporary expansion for travellers and visitors

Eligibility has also been temporarily broadened to include:

  • People planning to visit high-risk LGAs
  • Particularly those participating in outdoor recreational activities such as:
    • Camping
    • Caravanning
    • Fishing
    • Hunting
    • Boating

This expanded eligibility will remain in place until 1 June (start of winter), reflecting the increased risk during the extended mosquito season.

Why vaccination matters

Japanese encephalitis is spread through mosquito bites and, while rare, can cause serious illness. Vaccination is an important way to reduce your risk, particularly if you are travelling to or spending time in affected areas.
