Strong bones, strong future
We don’t often think about our bones until something goes wrong. Osteoporosis is known as the “silent disease” because it usually doesn’t cause pain or symptoms, until a fracture happens.
Why it matters
- Osteoporosis affects millions worldwide, including many Australians.
- Risk increases with age, after menopause, or if you’ve had long-term use of some medicines (like steroids).
- Lifestyle factors like smoking, low vitamin D, and inactivity can also weaken bones.
What you can do every day
- Eat for your bones — think calcium-rich foods like yoghurt, cheese, leafy greens, and fortified foods.
- Catch some safe sun for vitamin D, or ask if you need a supplement.
- Move it or lose it — walking, light jogging, or resistance training help keep bones strong.
- Stay steady — simple fall-prevention steps like good shoes, clear walkways, and proper lighting at home make a big difference.
- Know your numbers — a bone density (DEXA) scan can help spot issues early.
We can review your bone health, organise scans, and help you put together a plan for strong bones into the future.
This World Osteoporosis Day, take a moment to think about your bone health — and what small steps you can take to keep them strong for life.
